Healthy Heart
This section of Robert Essex Books
is dedicated to leading a healthy lifestyle and taking care of
your heart. Having suffered multiple heart attacks and
subsequent bypass surgery, author Robert Essex is only too aware
of how fragile your heart can be, and how important it is to
take care of this most important organ.
One of the most
important reasons for writing "Just a cup of tea" was Robert's
hope that through the book he could raise awareness, not just
about Heart Disease, but about how whole families are affected
by the disease, not just the person suffering from it.
If you've read
"Just a cup of tea", you'll no doubt have been shocked and
inspired in equal measures. The information below will
hopefully help readers to lead healthier lifestyles, and reduce
the risk of developing this deadly disease.
**Please
remember that the information provided below is for reference
only. If you have any concerns or questions regarding your
heart, you should speak with your doctor immediately.

We all know that we should eat more healthy
foods, such as fruit and vegetables, as part of
a healthy, balanced diet. Eating healthily
is one of the best ways of protecting your heart
against heart disease. The 5 simple tips
below are designed to help you achieve a healthy
diet:
-
Try to eat 5
portions of fruit and veg a day.
Although that sounds like a lot, a glass of
fruit juice or can of beans counts as one
portion.
-
Reduce the
amount of salt you consume. Try eating
your dinner without adding extra salt.
After a couple of days you won't notice the
difference.
-
Reduce the
amount of refined sugar you consume by
reducing the amount of sweets and cakes you
eat. Next time you feel hungry, don't
eat a sugary cake, eat an apple or banana
instead.
-
Increase your
intake of Omega 3, by adding more fish to
your diet.
-
Although
potatoes don't count towards your 5 a day
fruit and veg, they are an important source
of fibre, which is vital to your digestive
system. That doesn't mean you should
eat chips every day though. Instead
why not try boiled, mashed or jacket
potatoes for a healthier alternative.

Just a few minutes exercise a day can make a big
difference to your heart and overall fitness
levels. By taking time out to exercise,
you'll not only be looking after your heart,
you'll also improve your fitness and stamina,
help control your weight, and improve your self
esteem.
Although it's not always possible to get to the
gym every week, or partake in organised sports
clubs, everyone should try to include 3 or 4 30
minute work outs each week. You don't need
expensive equipment or a team of opponents to
play against, just the will power and
determination to make exercising a part of your
normal routine.
Any exercise that increases your heart rate for
a sustained period, such as walking, hiking,
cycling, swimming or jogging will improve your
fitness, and protect your heart.
For more information on suitable exercises and
how they can benefit your health, please consult
with your doctor. |
